Christmas - A Celebration Of Giving

Christmas, the well-known and well-loved festive season, is not only celebrated the world over but has been celebrated for millennia.

It now principally celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the greatest of Christian prophets. In allowing Jesus to be born into this world, Christians believe that God gave His Son to us mortal human beings to be our spiritual Saviour.

Originally, the festival that we now call Christmas was not as we know it today. The birth of Jesus Christ was not celebrated for centuries after the event.

The main festival in December from before the time of Christ was the Roman one called Saturnalia, which celebrates the annual commemoration of the temple of the god Saturn at the beginning of the month of Capricorn.

This used to be on December 17th alone, but the festival was so popular that it would last for a whole week, with almost everyone taking part. Two Roman emperors tried to reduce the festivities to shorter periods of three days and five days but could not succeed.

It is in Saturnalia that is found the tradition of gift-giving, besides also the merrymaking and the feasting.

It was much later that Christian leaders selected a late December date to remember the important event of the birth of Jesus Christ.

Since it was around the time of Saturnalia and since Saturnalia itself was so popular and widely enjoyed, the two festivals came to coincide and be celebrated as one.

Modern Christmas includes elements of different cultures which are not purely related to the birth of Jesus Christ, such as Santa Claus, elves, reindeer and sleighs, meals of turkey or roast beef, and holly and mistletoe.

Today, Christmas still embodies the spirit of giving. We remember loved ones and friends at this time and show our love for and appreciation of them by giving them gifts.

Merry Christmas to one and all!

Christmas Turkey

The traditional roast turkey is an all-time favourite at Christmas. Although it is a long process from beginning to end, it is really a fairly easy task to cook and serve up a good turkey for the big day.
